Fax is short for facsimile. It is a way of transferring copies of documents, over the telephone network. Typical traditional faxes travel over a circuit switched call, just like a landline voice call, or a dialup internet session.

Fax Over IP

Fax over IP seems to be a bit hit and miss on some VoIP PBX systems.

FoIP (Fax over IP), is generally sent over the internet, when it gets to a fax server it is transferred to traditional phonelines, where its transmission carries on like a traditional fax.

eFax provides an internet faxing service.
