A softphone is a "software-phone". Quite literally a telephone that is merely a software package running on your PC.

Examples of softphones include the Skype client, the Gizmo client, Xtens X-Lite softphone, and the IDEFISK IAX softphone.

Softphones can utilise your PCs speaker and microphone, or a USB VoIP phone, or other compatible audio hardware.
